'The Countrey of Japan is very large and spacious … it is Mountainous and craggie, full of Rockes and stonie places'

Hokkaido & Northern Honshu

This region of Japan combines Hokkaido, the northernmost island of the Japanese archipelago and the second largest, with the northern part (Tohoku province) of its neighbour, the largest and principal island of Honshu. Both areas have a rural, rugged terrain and majestic scenery, and are comparatively untouched by tourism. There are also some big differences, however - Hokkaido has a Siberian climate, for example, whilst northern Honshu is generally more temperate.

Tohoku is essentially mountainous and the best area to see something of unspoilt, rural Japan and its folk traditions. Hokkaido, which is home to only 5 per cent of the Japanese population, is especially renowned for its scenery, wildlife and outdoor pursuits. It is also the last remaining outpost of the Ainu, the original inhabitants of Japan, who are racially akin to the people of Siberia.
