Souvenirs from Lisbon Film, Music and Fado The Lisbon Earthquake |
Film, Music and Fado As befits its capital status, Lisbon offers a variety of music, theater and ballet. Moviegoing is a particular pleasure, as films are all shown in their original language with subtitles, rather than dubbed, so you can catch the latest releases from home. Fado, a unique style of Portuguese music, is heard at its best in Lisbon and should at least be experienced. This melancholy and passionate music is traditionally sung by a woman, accompanied by guitar. Its origins lie deep in history, a mix of Moorish and African elements, and can be described as a kind of light operetta. The best place to hear it is at one of the fado houses in the Upper Town (Bairro Alto), or in the Alfama district. |
