It was virtually untouched by the 1755 earthquake, and the atmospheric jumble of streets and squares tumble down steep slopes to the Baixa (the Lower Town) below. At night it's one of the city's liveliest quarters, where in fado houses you can hear melancholy, evocative Portuguese songs. The Elevador de Santa Justa, a wonderfully clanky funicular built in 1902, runs up the hill.
