Baixa and Rossio

Rossio Square, properly known as Praça Dom Pedro IV, and the grid of streets forming the Baixa district will repeatedly draw you back. The Teatro Nacional (National Theater) and a soaring column topped by a statue of Dom Pedro IV dominate the spacious Rossio, which is lined with stores and cafés. The square has an ancient history and was the scene of Inquisition burnings in the 16th century. Between Rossio and the waterfront lies Baixa, a perfect example of rational 18th-century planning, erected at the Marquês de Pombal's instigation after the 1755 earthquake. The orderly streets are lined with lovely old stores, gracious buildings and tiled facades.
