Castelo de São Jorge y Olisipónia
Visible from many parts of Lisbon, the Castelo de São Jorge (St. George's Castle) stands on the site of the earliest settlement.
Fortified by the Romans, Visigoths and Moors, it was besieged in 1147 by Afonso Enriques and his Christian army and finally
fell after 17 weeks - a turning point in the struggle to evict the Moors from Portugal. The Moorish battlements still stand,
offering superb views over the rooftops to the river. Today, extensive restoration within the main structure has made a verdant,
cool oasis, with terraces, pools and fountains. A multimedia exhibition (Centro de Interpretação da Cidade de Lisboa - Olisipónia)
gives insight into the history of Lisbon. The Alfama district around the palace is worth exploring.
