Museu Nacional do Azulejo

Throughout Lisbon and Portugal, you'll notice the exquisite tiles, or azulejos, adorning the walls of countless buildings. The Museu Nacional do Azulejo (National Tile Museum) traces the history of the painted glazed tile, which has been used in Portugal since the 15th century. You can see how the art developed from simple early tiles to complex, multicolored modern examples. Blue and white has predominated since Chinese porcelain arrived in Europe; the wonderful tiled view of Lisbon, made in 1738, is a fine example.
