No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.' DR SAMUEL JOHNSON, (1777) Queen Vistoria Memorial © AAA |
London
London is one of the world's few truly great cities. Its depth of history is unrivalled by any other major capital, its shopping is the envy of Europe, and it is currently undergoing a renaissance in cuisine and fashion. With around 28 million visitors per year and one of the world's most cosmopolitan indigenous make-ups, it is a global melting pot, catering for all tastes and nationalities. Of course, not all is perfect. Hotel prices are too high, the weather is unpredictable (so be prepared!) and the traffic is horrendous. On the other hand, London is a very civilised city. Life may be fast and sometimes impersonal, but it is very rarely aggressive, and oases of calm - the parks, historic churches, museums, and hotels and department stores serving afternoon tea - are never more than a few steps away. |
