Apsley House

( Highly Recommended )

Apsley House, also known as the Wellington Museum, was the London home of Arthur Wellesley, first Duke of Wellington, from 1829 until his death in 1852. Wellington was the greatest soldier of his day, achieving major military successes in India, Spain and Portugal before crowning his career with the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815.
The museum divides into two parts. Collections of plate and china, magnificent table centrepieces, swords, medals and so on relate to the Duke's adventures, and there is also an outstanding picture collection with works by many famous Old Masters. Intriguingly, the most memorable piece is a heroic oversized statue of Napoleon by Canova (commissioned by the Little Emperor himself) in which he is depicted as a god.
