5 Natural History Museum
A family favourite where dinosaurs roar back to life, an earthquake shakes the ground and creepy-crawlies make the flesh tingle. To thousands of children the Natural History Museum is 'the Dinosaur Museum', and no visit would be complete without poring over the superbly displayed skeletons of the museum's world-famous collection. There's much more here than just prehistoric monsters, however. Highest of all on the heavyweights list is the blue whale. It may only be a model, but what a model, measuring over 28m with a real 25m skeleton alongside. Around here there is a vast array of mammal specimens to ponder on while at the other end of the size spectrum, children (if not adults) will love the 'Creepy-crawlies' exhibition. For more ethereal concepts, visit the state-of-the-art Ecology display and gingerly examine the workings of your own body in the Human biology section. One of the museum's greatest attractions is its very structure, built in neo-Gothic cathedral style by Alfred Waterhouse in 1880. The Cromwell Road frontage is magnificent and there is a wealth of interior detail to enjoy. Once you've seen life on earth, explore the adjacent Earth Galleries (formerly known as the Geological Museum) which tell the story of the earth's formation and its on-going upheavals. This is a far cry from the old museum's displays of rocks in dusty glass cases, though its collection of gemstones remains a highlight. The main attraction is The Power Within exhibitions where the ground-shaking sensations of a real earthquake are simulated and audio visuals show breathtaking footage of volcanoes and their devastating effects on everyday objects.Address: Cromwell Road (Life Galleries), Exhibition Road (Earth Galleries) Phone: (020) 7942 5000 WEBSITE: www.nhm.ac.uk Open: Mon-Sat 10-5:50, Sun and public hols 11-5:50 Restaurant: Life Galleries Restaurant (Moderately priced); Waterhouse Coffee Bar (Inexpensive); Globe Café (Inexpensive) Bus: 74 Metro: South Kensington Accessible: Excellent Admission: Expensive.
