PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Internal Flights
Iberia, the national carrier, has regular flights linking Madrid with other major cities in Spain. The most frequent are between Madrid and Barcelona, with the Puente Aéreo (shuttle service) operating from 7am-11pm.

Trains
The main office of RENFE (Spanish National Railways) is at 44 Calle de Alcalá. Tickets and information are also available at Barajas Airport and the three main stations. From Atocha, trains are mainly to southern Spain. The AVE high-speed service to Seville, leaves from the new annexe, Puerta de Atocha. From Chamartín, trains go to the north, northeast and France. Travellers can get discounts on some journeys if they travel on so-called 'blue days' marked on calendars available from any RENFE office. A special card for tourists gives unlimited travel on the system.

Buses
Estación Sur de Autobuses, the city's main bus station, is at the corner of Calle Méndez Alvaro and Calle Retama. Nearby are the Atocha Railway Station and Méndez Alvaro Metro station. Although buses cover the whole of Madrid, the system is somewhat complicated to understand and it is easier to take the Metro.

Metro
The easiest way to get around Madrid, apart from on foot, is by Metro. The 10-line, colour-coded system has stops close to all the major attractions. The direction of the train is shown by the name of the terminus station. Trains run 6am-1:30am. Fares are inexpensive. If you buy a bono de diez viajes, (10-ride ticket for Metro or bus), you get a discount.
