( Worth Seeing )

The nearby Ventura Rodríguez Metro station is a tribute to the flamboyant architect of this small, mid-18th-century baroque church. This was an early work by Ventura Rodríguez, who went on design the chapel in the Palacio Real. Dusty and dull on the outside, the cream interior is fresh and bright, with an impressive and massive altarpiece by Juan de Mena. In the cupola, the fine frescoes by Luis González Velázquez depict the dashing Duke of Berwick astride a white horse. He was the hero of the Battle of Almansa (1707), a crucial victory in the War of the Spanish Succession, which placed the first of the Bourbon kings on the Spanish throne. The 18th-century organ is still in working order.
