Iglesia de San Andrés Apóstol

( Worth Seeing )

San Andrés is a church with two significant chapels. San Andrés itself, occupying the domed end of the building, reopened in 1998 after years of renovation. Compared with the poorly-lit interiors of most churches, this one is a surprise: bright pink and grey, highlighted with fruit, flowers and angels, like the marzipan on an expensive cake. At the back of San Andrés is the Capilla de San Isidro, which once held the bones of San Isidro, Madrid's patron saint. Beneath the church, renovation continues on the 16th-century Capilla del Obispo (Bishop's Chapel). Closed to the public for restoration, it contains one of the most magnificent Gothic altarpieces in Madrid, a towering, gilded masterpiece attributed to Francisco Giralte.
