Museo Arqueológico Nacional
( Worth Seeing ) The National Archaeological Museum's collection reflects Mediterranean cultures as well as those of the Iberian peninsula. Although the old-fashioned, glass-cased displays could put off the younger generation, exhibits such as the Dama de Elche are fascinating. Discovered near Alicante, this finely-carved bust of a noblewoman from Elche dates from around the 4th century BC; the hole at the back probably held the ashes of a well-born person. Like a photograph in Vogue magazine, her elaborate headdress and jewellery reflect the fashions of Iberia, but they also relate to Greek and Celtic styles. Moreover, they can be traced through the centuries to the traditional hair-styles of Valencia. Other treasures in the museum include porcelain from the Buen Retiro factory, Greek pottery, and an intriguing Roman sundial. In the garden, a specially dug-out underground room contains reproductions of the famous prehistoric cave paintings of bison and deer from Altamira. Explanations in several languages are available.
