El Rastro (Rastro Flea Market)
( Do not miss ) Sunday would not be Sunday without a visit to the Rastro Flea Market. This sprawl of stalls attracts as many locals as visitors, even if they have no intention of buying anything. Start at the Plaza de Cascorro, with its statue of El Cascorro (Eloy Gonzalo), a 19th-century hero of the Spanish-American war in Cuba. The stalls here sell leather bags, weird crafts and perfumes of dubious origin. Once you reach the trees that shade Calle de la Ribera de Curtidores, the quality improves, with shops making solid furniture and wrought-iron weather vanes. Bars and pastry shops along the street are also open. In a courtyard, through an ancient arch, is the Galerías Piquer, a complex of 50 antiques shops selling everything from clocks to oriental furniture. Explore side streets such as Calle de San Cayetano, Calle de Rodas and Calle de Fray Ceferino González, for art equipment and picture frames, bird cages and fishing nets.
