To the west of the city, on the far side of the Río Manzanares, this vast park includes a restaurant, cafeterías, tennis courts, swimming-pools, a lake, a zoo and the Parque de Atracciones (amusement park). With 1,820ha these former hunting grounds are ideal for a picnic, kicking about with a ball or even tramping through the rough scrubland. During the Civil War, Franco's troops were based here, and some signs of the trenches are still visible. The most fun way to get there is by the Teleférico but you can also go by Metro (Batán, Lago) or drive there. Some parking places are popular meeting spots for the gay community. It is best avoided at night.
