Music and Film

Munich is a major European cultural center, with thriving movie and publishing industries and a proud musical tradition. Three symphony orchestras are based here, and the Residenz provides an impressive venue - either in the concert hall or, in summer, in the courtyard. Opera and ballet are staged at the Bavarian State Opera, where the July Opera Festival is the highlight of the city's calendar. The main cultural center is the modern Gasteig, home of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra; students from the Richard Strauss Conservatory give free lunchtime or early-evening recitals in the Small Concert Hall during the week. The annual International Film Festival takes place at the Gasteig in late June and early July - the high point of a series of festivals devoted to the movies.

Munich tends to shut down early, but Schwabing has many cabarets, theaters and live music venues ranging from rock to folk to jazz - including the well-known Jazzclub Unterfahrt Einsteinstrasse 42.
