Boutiques and Markets

There's good window-shopping all over the old center of Munich, especially along the pedestrian-only Neuhauser Strasse and Kaufingerstrasse. Maximilianstrasse is a browser's paradise, lined with designer fashion boutiques, art galleries and jewelers. More stores abound in the arcades and lanes leading off Residenzstrasse. Antiques, less expensive fashion and secondhand stores are concentrated in the student area of Schwabing, and Bavarian crafts are sold in the streets that run off Max-Joseph-Platz. Munich's famous (and expensive) open-air food market, Viktualienmarkt, with its formidable women vendors and fresh goods ranging from local cheese to Alpine flowers, sets up south of the Marienplatz every day except late Saturday afternoon and Sunday.
