Schloss Nymphenburg

For centuries the mighty Wittelsbach family ruled Bavaria. Schloss Nymphenburg (Nymphenburg Palace) was built as their summer villa by Agostino Barelli between 1664 and 1674. Every generation of Wittelsbachs subsequently added to his creation, and the palace now measures 1,640 feet from end to end. In the central section is the Schönheitsgalerie, or Gallery of Beauties - 36 paintings of beautiful women produced between 1827 and 1850 for Ludwig I. The former palace stables house the Marstallmuseum, a museum of porcelain and a collection of state carriages and sleighs, and in the 1734 Amalienburg hunting lodge there is a Hall of Mirrors.
