Introduction
``November always seemed to me the Norway of the year.” American poet Emily Dickinson, from a letter to friends, 1864 Nordheimsund, Hardanger, Norway |
Introduction
Norway is the edge of Europe's most northerly land mass, where sea and mountains have merged to produce one of the world's most breathtaking landscapes. This is a country whose ancient peoples, the Vikings, helped shape the history of northern Europe. The Vikings once controlled half of Britain, and sent mariners as far west as Newfoundland and as far south as the Strait of Gibraltar. It is this vigorous and resourceful national character, reflected in Viking tradition, that still exemplifies modern Norway. This is a nation that has mastered an inhospitable landscape without despoiling it, even becoming a leading oil producer in the hostile environment of the North Sea. |
