NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION

TRAIN (tog)
The Norges Statsbaner (NSB) network operates as far north as the Arctic Circle. Travel is comfortable but not cheap. Reservations are recommended on train jouneys and a must on long distance and overnight trains; inquire about discounts when booking (PHONE: 81 50 08 88, then dial 4 for an English-speaking operator, or URL: www.nsb.no).

BUS (buss)
Buses are an excellent, inexpensive way to explore regions that are less well-served by train. NOR-WAY Bussekspress (PHONE: 81 54 44 44 URL: www.nor-way.no) is the national operator. Buy your ticket on board; it is not usually necessary to book in advance.

FERRY (ferje)
Norway relies heavily on ferries and express boats/catamarans, which connect with trains and buses. Car ferries operate on a first-come, first-served system; payment is made on board. Some waterways have ferry services. Hurtigruten, a grand coastal steamer, links Bergen with Kirkenes, in far northern Norway, and calls at 34 ports en route.
