PERSONAL SAFETY There is an efficient police force modelled on the British system. Police do not carry arms. Whilst New Zealand is generally a safe society, the usual sensible precautions should be taken to ensure personal safety: Avoid walking alone in dark areas of towns. If walking in bush or mountain country, take good maps, dress sensibly, take supplies of food and drink, and tell someone what your plans are. Beware of pickpockets. Do not leave valuables in unattended cars. Police assistance: PHONE: 111 from any call box |
