Internal Flights
Air New Zealand and Ansett New Zealand fly the principal routes within the country and together link about 30 destinations. Both airlines offer an Air Pass scheme which must be bought before traveling to New Zealand but can be open-dated. Trains The New Zealand railroad system, run by Tranz Rail, operates long-distance trains with daily services between the main centers, and the Coastal Pacific and TranzAlpine Express. There are various travel passes available, which allow travel on ferries operated by the railroads, and on Inter City long-distance bus lines. Reservations PHONE: 0800 802 802. Coaches and Buses The Inter City long-distance bus network (PHONE: 09 357 8400) covers much of the country, including many of the tourist areas. Newmans Coachlines, in the Nor -th Island, operate all major routes, and several com -panies offer package tours by long-distance bus. Ferries The inter-island ferry service is operated by Tranz Rail (PHONE: 0800 802 802). It is a roll-on roll-off service carrying passeng -ers, motor vehicles, and railroad wagons. There are several round-trip sailings from Wellington to Picton each day, taking 3 hours 20 minutes each way. Urban Transport Christchurch has a modern tramway system and Auckland has a good bus network, including tourist buses which shuttle around the widely spread attractions of the city. Wellington is a major transport center and ferry terminal, with a cable car from downtown to the upper slopes of the Kelburn area. In some cities bus fares are reduced in off-peak hours Mon-Fri. Cyclists are well provided for. |
