Speed limits on urban roads: 50kph

Speed limits on main roads: 100kph

Speed limits on motorways: 100kph

Seat Belts: Must be worn in front seats at all times and in rear seats where fitted.

Random breath and blood testing. Limit: 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. For drivers under 21 the limit is zero.

Petrol comes in two grades: unleaded 96 octane and unleaded 91 octane. Diesel is also available. LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) and CNG (compressed natural gas) are also available (CNG not in the South Island). In rural areas service stations may be scarce and may be closed at weekends or outside normal hours. Major centers have 24-hour stations.

There are plenty of motor garages and service stations throughout the country and most rental companies include a free breakdown service as part of the hire package. Automobile Association members receive free reciprocal membership of the New Zealand AA, including breakdown assistance, maps, and accommodations guides (PHONE: 09 377 4660, Fax: 09 309 4563).
