Auckland

The city, built over the dormant remnants of some 50 volcanoes, sprawls across a narrow isthmus between the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea, beach and bush readily at hand. With a population of 1 million, it is New Zealand's largest and most cosmopolitan city as well as being the main commercial and industrial centre. Auckland also offers an array of cultural and sporting activities.

Auckland is the major New Zealand gateway for air and sea passengers and there are road, rail, and long-distance bus services to most parts of the North Island.
European settlement began here in 1840, and it was New Zealand's capital until 1865. The compact downtown area is still its hub, but there are major shopping and entertainment areas beyond the central streets, and the attractions for visitors spread to and beyond the suburbs.
For those wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, in addition to its two harbors and gulf islands - the multitude of yachts always bobbing about in the Hauraki Gulf has given the city its nickname "City of Sails" - Auckland offers extensive regional reserves, a "new" volcanic island, a gannet colony, white and black sand beaches, and a forest backdrop to the west.
