Dunedin
The town was founded in 1848 by settlers of the Free Church of Scotland at the head of Otago Harbour, a long waterway sheltered by the scenic Otago Peninusla. Prosperity soon followed in the wake of the 1860s Otago goldrush, and the city became New Zealand's wealthiest, leaving a legacy of handsome, well-preserved buildings. Above all though, Dunedin is known as a university city (New Zealand's first university was founded here in 1869), with a lively social, arts, and music scene. The Octagon, at the center of the town, is dominated by a statue to the Scottish poet Robbie Burns and the imposing Anglican St Paul's Cathedral. The fact that the country's only whisky distillery is located in Dunedin is another reminder of its Scottish connections.Extensive formal gardens (the first to be created in New Zealand) at the northern end of the city include a rose walk, the Ellen Terry garden, a rhododendron dell (best seen between October and November when the shrubs are in bloom), azalea beds, and winter gardens. |
