In addition to being one of New Zealand's most historically interesting regions (for both European and Maori), this is among the North Island's most popular resort areas. The Bay of Islands Maritime and Historic Park consists of over 800km of coastline and some 150 islands, as well as many reserves on the surrounding mainland and the communities of Paihia, Russell, and Kerikeri.
