In The Know
Did You Know?
Rotorua

The city of Rotorua, 234km southeast of Auckland, is recognized as the North Island's leading tourist center because of its Maori culture, geothermal activity, and scenic variety. The volcanic activity is first apparent because of the sulfureous odors in the air.

Whakarewarewa is the city's leading geothermal reserve but the area has a number of other places with such activity, plus a dozen lakes, an evergreen forest, and a host of other attractions. A selection is listed here.
The visitor information center is in Fenton Street and the main shopping thoroughfare is Tutanekai Street.
