Lower North Island
South of Lake Taupo the North Island becomes hillier. Tongariro National Park, the first of New Zealand's national parks, is dominated by a trio of volcanoes, marking the southern edge of the volcanic belt. In the west, the city of New Plymouth is watched over by its dormant volcano, Mount Taranaki. In the east, the hills of Hawkes Bay, a horticultural, wine-growing, and sheep-farming region, sweep down to the twin cities of Napier and Hastings. In between, the navigable Whanganui River is steeped in Maori history, and you can canoe part of its 329km. Down at the southern tip of the island lies the vibrant capital city of Wellington, guarding Cook Strait.Within easy reach of the capital is the Wairarapa district, where the small town of Martinborough has several boutique wineries. Beyond, a road leads to Palliser Bay and Cape Palliser, where there are rugged, remote beaches. |
