Wellington

European settlement commenced here in 1840 and, following its selection as New Zealand's capital in 1865, the city has never looked back.

Located at the southern tip of the North Island, Wellington is an important commercial center and has excellent transport links with the rest of the country - by ferry, air, rail, and long-distance bus. It is also the nation's cultural center, home town of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Royal New Zealand Ballet Company, and Te Papa Tongarewa, the Museum of New Zealand. Various music and arts festivals are held here each year, and the entertainment scene is thriving. Bounded on three sides by the sea and inland by circling hills, Wellington is a compact city, easy to get around on foot, and its fine deep harbor acts as a focal point. To provide relief from the hustle and bustle, there are plenty of gardens, parks and hilly viewpoints, in addition to the nearby beaches.
It is a city with character, divided into several parts. There is the older, distinctive heart, including its parliament and government offices; there is the Hutt Valley - largely residential, but with industry at its southern end; and there are the northern suburbs of Porirua and the long sandy beaches of the Kapiti Coast.
