Hawkes Bay is a picturesque region of hills sweeping down to the central east coast, a fertile plain popularly known as "the fruit bowl of New Zealand." It is also a thriving wine producer, with a number of older vineyards. Tragically, the twin cities of Napier and Hastings suffered an earthquake in 1931.
