In The Know
Did You Know?

“The great drawback to New Zealand comes from the feeling that after crossing the world and journeying over so many thousand miles, you have not at all succeeded in getting away from England”.

ANTHONY TROLLOPE Australia and New Zealand (1873)

Upper South Island

Despite being one-third larger in area than the North Island, the South Island has only one-quarter of the country's population. The scenery is internationally reknowned for its beauty and variety.

Several national parks lie in the northern half of the South Island, from the bush and beach scenery of Abel Tasman National Park in Nelson province to the great glaciers of Westland on the west coast, a place of legend where men have searched for jade, gold, coal, and timber. In between, the Southern Alps and their foothills offer alpine vistas and a host of opportunities for walking and observing wildlife. Christchurch is the South Island's international gateway and its largest city. Considered the most "English" of New Zealand's cities, it stands on the edge of the Canterbury Plains.
