Lower South Island
Fiordland, one of the world's largest and most spectacular national parks, covers the southwest corner of the South Island, its shoreline slashed by great inlets stretching far inland into a region of forests and lakes. Gateway to the area is the resort of Te Anau, situated on the shore of its great lake. Lovers of the great outdoors are attracted to photogenic Queenstown, on Lake Wakatipu. Within easy reach of fiords, skiing, and various adventure options, it is a world famous holiday destination. South is Invercargill, regional center of Southland and the main departure point for New Zealand's often forgotten third island, Stewart Island, well off the main tourist track and a haven for bush wildlife. Dunedin, sometimes dubbed "the Edinburgh of the South," is an important city for commerce and university education. |
