Wanaka

( Highly Recommended )

The eastern gateway of the Haast Pass to South Westland, Wanaka stands on the shores of Lake Wanaka. Although lacking the pizazz of its neighbor Queenstown, it nonetheless has just as much to offer in outdoor thrills, with skiing in season at Treble Cone, Cardrona, and Waiorau skifields. It is the headquarters of the Mount Aspiring National Park.
For an enjoyable day's adventure, walk to the Rob Roy Glacier from West Matukituki Valley (3-4 hours return). But be warned: Alpine weather is unpredictable and blizzards can occur suddenly at any time of year. Take warm, all-weather clothing, food, map and compass, and ideally, a local guide.
