Museum of Transport, Technology and Social History

( Worth Seeing )

Known by its acronym “MOTAT,” this museum, spread over two sites 1km apart, displays vintage cars, aircraft, trams, colonial buildings, and other technological items from yesteryear, largely maintained by volunteer groups. Exhibits of interest include a replica of the Pearce aircraft, which reputedly flew near Timaru earlier than the Wright Brothers' more famous flight; and the only Solent Mark IV flying boat left in the world. A historic tram runs to Auckland Zoo.
