Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf

( Worth Seeing )

Waitemata Harbour, on the northern side of the isthmus, opens onto the Hauraki Gulf. You can get there by fast and frequent catamarans, ferries, launches, and yachts from the Ferry Terminal on Quay Street.
The most popular of the Gulf islands is Waiheke, 35 minutes from Auckland by fast ferry. Craft shops, vineyards, and superb beaches are among its numerous attractions.
The volcanic cone of Rangitoto is the nearest island to the city. The eruption that occurred here is the most recent in the region (thought to be sometime within the past 600 years). You can take a safari tour across the craggy rocks to the summit, or you can walk to the crater in about one hour.
