Nelson

( Highly Recommended )

Sheltered by hills, the sunny city of Nelson is the center of a rich horticultural, forestry, and fishing region. It is also noted for its arts and crafts, especially pottery, which is displayed at local galleries. Foremost is the Suter Art Gallery. The Wearable Arts Awards held annually in September showcase weird and wacky fashions made from unlikely materials.
Paths in the Botanical Reserve lead up to a viewpoint known as the Centre of New Zealand. There is excellent swimming at Tahuna Beach and in the nearby Maitai, Aniseed, and Lee rivers.
