Amid the lagoons that lie on the northern fringes of Westland National Park, beside the Waitangi-roto River, lies New Zealand's only breeding site for the white heron. These majestic birds nest between November and February, during which time tours may be taken to see them. Tours leave from Whataroa, and include a jet-boat ride, a ride in a minivan, and a short walk.
