A Walk Around Downtown Auckland

Attractions ranging from the Aotea Centre to a ride up the Sky Tower feature on this culturally interesting walk.

From Queen Elizabeth II Square walk eastwards along Quay Street. Turn into Britomart Place, past the bus terminal, then cross Customs Street and proceed to Emily Place. Take the steps in the reserve to Princes Street, passing the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

The Governor-General's former residence, the Maclaurin Chapel, and the Maidment Arts Theatre all form part of the extensive Auckland University.

Stroll through Albert Park to the City Art Gallery

A short block downhill is Queen Street. Note the Civic Theatre, opened in 1929; the Arabian designs inside are still eye-catching. It now forms part of the Entertainment Centre which includes the IMAX cinema. One block up Queen Street is Aotea Square. Cross the square to the Aotea Centre and have a look within its atrium.

From the Aotea Centre, walk behind the Civic Theatre, along brick-surfaced Elliot Street, to Victoria Street, then turn left up hill.

Looming above you is the Sky Tower. Ride high to its observation decks to dine or admire the view.

Walk north along Federal Street and through St Patrick's Square. Continue for one block west, then walk along Hobson Street to the water.

Ahead is the Hobson's Wharf National Maritime Museum and the America's Cup Village, built for New Zealand's defense of its trophy in 2000. Enjoy a meal or a drink at one of the bars and cafés in this rejuvenated part of the city.
