7 Queenstown's Skyline Gondola
One of the highlights of the South Island's premier tourist center is a ride high above the town on the Skyline Gondola. The many attractions of Queenstown and its surrounding area are featured later in the book, but one of the most enjoyable things to do is to take a ride on the Skyline Gondola cableway, which opened in 1967. The commanding view from the hilltop makes this a good way to get your bearings. The base terminal is a 15-minute walk from Queenstown's shops. The ride itself, lasting just four minutes, takes visitors 450m up a steep hillside in small gondolas suspended from overhead cables. From the viewing platform at the top of the hill the breathtaking views encompass Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, and the surrounding snow-capped mountains of the Remarkables range. The complex at the upper terminal includes a restaurant and a wide-screen cinema where an entertaining short film, Kiwi Magic, is shown at regular intervals throughout the day. The film takes viewers on a tour of New Zealand's finest scenery by various means of transport, including biplane and jet-boat.Address: Brecon Street, Queenstown Phone: 03 442 7860 Open: 9am-10pm Restaurant: Café and restaurant morning to evening Accessible: Check Admission: Moderate Other: Arrowtown Practical: Queenstown |
