The City

The Greeks built their settlement on the hills above the bay, and 300 years later the Romans settled here. The modern city stands on the same spot and has spread down to the flat land along the sea. Sheltered to the east and west by substantial promontories, and with the Maritime Alps to the north, Nice has its own microclimate, with mild winters and perfect summers. Over the centuries city planners have taken advantage of these conditions, resulting in one of the most graceful and flower-filled cities in Europe - the average Frenchman's retirement-home fantasy.

In recent years, Nice has marketed itself as a convention center and vacation hot spot, attested by the variety of hotels. It has more museums than any other French city outside of Paris, and plenty of festivals and events throughout the year.
