Getting Around

Nice is a big city, with several districts - each of which you'll want to experience. The best way to orient yourself is to take a bus or taxi to an area, then explore on foot. Start with the atmospheric and picturesque Old Town (Vieille Ville), which you'll probably want to visit more than once. The seafront stretches nearly 4 miles west of the Old Town, with the famous Promenade des Anglais running along much of it. Behind the promenade and situated around the place Masséna is the commercial and business center, punctuated by peaceful gardens. The upscale residential suburb of Cimiez lies on the hill behind the old port and is home to several excellent museums. As you explore, notice how the ambience varies, from the earthy gaiety in the streets of the Old Town to the haute couture you'll find along the Promenade des Anglais. You can see the different parts of Nice in style by hiring a calèche (horse-drawn carriage), or by taking the tourist train that trundles around the old quarter.
