Akershus Slott og Festning

Akershus slott (Akershus castle) stands on a rocky height on the eastern side of the harbor inlet of Pipervika. It was founded in 1299 as a royal residence, but by the end of the 17th century it had been transformed into the powerful festning (fortress) by the addition of ramparts. Guided tours take you into the castle's halls and subterranean passages. The Norges Hjemmefrontmuseum (Norway's Resistance Museum) here is a compelling record of Norway's experiences in World War II, when, for five years, the Nazi occupation headquarters were at Akershus.
