Oxford's Colleges
The Market Town The Original Alice |
The Market Town Oxford itself is famous for automobile manufacturing, and is the home of the Morris Oxford and the T-series MG sports car. They were produced at Oxford's Cowley factories, built up by William Richard Morris, later Viscount Nuffield, a self-made man who founded Oxford's Nuffield College among his numerous charitable acts. Visit the Museum of Oxford and discover the history of the city, and take in the Pitt Rivers Museum and the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Climb to the top of Carfax Tower for great views of Oxford. The streets radiating from Carfax constitute Oxford's main shopping area. Cornmarket has a range of well-known stores. Off Cornmarket's east side is Golden Cross, where Shakespeare's plays are said to have been performed. Just beyond is the celebrated covered market, with excellent food stalls and other outlets. Oxford's university population and townspeople exhibit a fascinating contrast of lifestyles. In medieval times this duality led to occasional bloody battles, but although today's students are noted for their often boisterous post-exam antics, Oxford is an eminently civilized place where the traditions of “town and gown” rest easily side by side. |
