University of Oxford Botanic Garden

The University of Oxford Botanic Garden was founded as a “physic garden” in 1621 and is Britain's oldest botanic garden. In imitation of the herbal gardens of Europe, it is a delightful enclave with a collection of more than 7,000 plant species. The River Cherwell and Magdalen College's tower enhance the setting, and the original layout survives today. South of the main garden is a less geometrically designed display created in the 1940s. There also are splendid greenhouses with 100-year-old cacti.
