USEFUL WORDS AND PHRASES
Portuguese is a Latin language, so an acquaintance with French, Spanish or Italian makes written Portuguese quite easy to understand. Understanding spoken Portuguese, however, is more difficult. Although on paper Portuguese words look similar to Spanish, they actually sound very different. Consonants are slurred, and vowels are flat and truncated, nasal or sometimes disregarded completely. Although English is widely spoken in tourist areas, knowing a few Portuguese words will make your trip more rewarding.
