1000 BC to AD 400 Occupation by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Iberians, Celts, Romans and Visigoths.

AD 713 Moors control most of the country and remain in power for 400 years.

1179 Pope recognizes Kingdom of Portugal.

1255 Afonso III makes Lisbon the capital of Portugal.

1480-1500s Age of Discovery.

1488 Bartolomeu Dias rounds Cape of Good Hope.

1580 End of Golden Age with invasion by Philip II of Spain, who declares himself Philip I of Portugal.

1668 Treaty of Lisbon recognizes Portuguese independence.

1755 Lisbon earthquake.

1910 Portuguese monarchy overthrown and replaced by republic.

1916-18 Portugal joins Allies in World War I.

1933 Estado Novo (New State) established.

1939-45 Portugal neutral throughout World War II.

1960s Portuguese colony of Goa occupied by India; local nationalist uprisings in Angola, Guinea and Mozambique.

1976 New constitution drawn up after the fall of the Estado Novo in 1974.

1986 Portugal admitted to European Union; start of period of huge economic growth and social reform.

1999 Portugal joins European Monetary System.

2001 Porto named European Capital of Culture for 2001.

2004 Portugal hosts the European Football (soccer) Championship.
