Chantilly, Château de
( Highly Recommended )

Surrounded by a lake and beautiful gardens designed by Le Nôtre, the Château de Chantilly is one of the most attractive castles in the Paris region. It houses the Musée Condé, named after one of its most distinguished owners, Le Grand Condé. The 16th-century Petit Château contains the 'Princes' apartments' and a library full of precious illuminated manuscripts including Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, dating from the 15th century; the Grand Château, destroyed during the Revolution and rebuilt in Renaissance style at the end of the 19th century, houses a magnificent collection of paintings by Raphaël, Clouet, Ingres, Corot, Delacroix, as well as porcelain and jewellery.
Facing the famous racecourse, the impressive 18th-century stables have been turned into a Musée Vivant du Cheval, illustrating the various crafts, jobs and sports connected with horses.
