Saint-Cloud, Parc de
( Worth Seeing ) This beautiful park, situated on the outskirts of Paris, extends over a vast hilly area overlooking the Seine. The castle designed by Jules-Hardouin Mansart for 'Monsieur', Louis XIV's brother, was destroyed by fire in 1870 and razed to the ground in 1891. It had been Bonaparte's favourite official residence when he was consul of the Republic. The park was designed by Le Nôtre, who took advantage of the steep terrain to build a magnificent 'grande cascade', in which water flows gracefully from one pool to the next over a distance of 90m. At the top the site of the former castle is now a terrace offering lovely views of the capital. Near by is the Jardin du Trocadéro, an English-style garden with an ornamental pool and an aviary. There are many shaded alleyways offering delightful walks through the 460-ha park.
