Carnavalet, Musée

( Highly Recommended )

This museum retraces the history of Paris from antiquity to the present day, and is worth visiting for the building alone: a beautiful Renaissance mansion, one of the oldest in Le Marais, remodelled in the 17th century. The Hôtel Carnavalet was the residence of Madame de Sévigné, who depicted Parisian society at the time of Louis XIV with a great deal of humour. Note the 16th-century lions guarding the entrance and Louis XIV's statue by Coysevox in the centre of the courtyard. In 1989, the museum was linked to the nearby Hôtel Le Peletier de St Fargeau, which dates from the late 17th century. The Hôtel Carnavalet deals with the period from the origins of the city to 1789, with mementoes of Madame de Sévigné and splendid Louis XV and Louis XVI furniture. The Hôtel Le Peletier de St Fargeau houses collections from 1789 to the present day. The Revolution is extensively illustrated, while the 19th and 20th centuries are represented by a number of reconstructions such as Marcel Proust's bedroom and the art nouveau reception room of the Café de Paris.
