Chaillot, Palais de

( Highly Recommended )

This imposing architectural complex on top of a hill overlooking the river and facing the Tour Eiffel across the pont d'Iéna offers magnificent views and houses two interesting museums.
Designed for the 1937 World Exhibition, the building consists of two separate pavilions with curved wings, on either side of a vast terrace decorated with monumental statues. Just below, the tiered Jardins du Trocadéro extend to the edge of the river. The ornamental fountain is particularly impressive at night when the powerful spray of water shines under the spotlights.
The Musée de l'Homme is devoted to anthropology and ethnography, dealing with Man and his development in various geographical contexts. It illustrates the arts and cultures of different civilisations from Africa, the Near East, the Arctic, Asia, Oceania and America by means of tools, weapons, jewellery, frescoes, sculptures, ceramics, handicrafts and musical instruments.
The Musée de la Marine is devoted to French maritime history from the 18th century onwards. The extensive collections show the development of navigational skills and include beautiful models of 18th-century sailing ships; they also provide an insight into the modern navy and retrace the history of maritime transport and great expeditions across the world.
The east wing was seriously damaged by fire in 1997 and the two museums it contained are now closed. The Musée des Monuments Français is scheduled to reopen in 2002 whereas the Musée du Cinéma Henri Langlois will probably move to new premises in 2001 as part of the new Maison du Cinéma.
